Parmigianino (1503-1540) was a talented Italian painter and printmaker of the Mannerism period. His time period was also considered High Renaissance. He and his peers had the difficult task of following major artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael. It was during his time that a new style, Mannerism, began and Parmigianino really helped to start it and make it popular. As tough as it was to follow such brilliant artists and start a new style, Parmigianino seemed to do just fine and even created his most famous masterpiece, Madonna with the Long Neck, which is known as one of the best paintings to come out of the Mannerism period. He also was one of the first Italian artists to use etching before starting his official drawings. Unfortunately, just as it seems that his career was really starting off, the artist died at the young age of 37 from unknown causes.
